What Questions Should You Ask Before Taking the Abortion Pill?

Taking the abortion pill is a big decision when faced with an unexpected pregnancy. It’s important to consider the facts and confirm your pregnancy before going forward with any type of abortion.

At Oasis Medical Center, we’re here to help you safeguard your health with free pregnancy services and options education. Get the facts today.

How Far Along Are You?

It’s vital to understand how far along you are in your pregnancy to determine what’s next for you, especially when considering the abortion pill. According to the FDA, the abortion pill is only recommended for women through 10 weeks of pregnancy. Otherwise, the health risks increase greatly.

Did you know that 26% of pregnancies end in miscarriage? Many times, women won’t experience immediate signs of a miscarriage. You could have miscarried and still received a positive pregnancy test, as hCG is still present in the body afterward.

Receiving an ultrasound is an important step before seeking the abortion pill, because the pregnancy may be outside the uterus. If the pregnancy is outside the uterus, the abortion pill will not be effective. At Oasis, we confirm a uterine pregnancy by identifying a gestation sac and a yolk sac within it. The yolk sac is the determining factor in identifying an early pregnancy and is the first structure formed. We also measure for gestational age and identify the fetal heartbeat. Get an ultrasound before taking the abortion pill, to verify the viability of the pregnancy.

Did You Consider the Physical Risks?

Another question to ask yourself before moving forward with the abortion pill is, “What are the risks of the abortion pill?” There are serious risks with the abortion pill (medical abortion), including the following:

  • Undiagnosed pregnancy outside the uterus poses extreme risk for internal bleeding
  • Failure to end the pregnancy or retained pregnancy tissue can lead to infection
  • Heavy bleeding that won’t stop (This could lead to a need for a D & C.)
  • Diarrhea and digestive pain
  • Allergic reaction to the medications
  • Infection (infection is indicated by an unpleasant vaginal odor and fever greater than 100.4 degrees F. that lasts more than 24 to 48 hours)
