Questions you may consider

A positive pregnancy test is not enough to ensure that you have a viable pregnancy (pregnancy capable of developing under normal circumstances). According to the Mayo Clinic, up to 1 in 5 pregnancies end in miscarriage. Also, some pregnancies develop outside the uterus (ectopic pregnancies), and are dangerous to your health if not properly treated. The medical procedures for an abortion and the medical procedures for an ectopic pregnancy are not the same.

Oasis uses medical-grade urine pregnancy tests. If your test is positive, one of our medical professionals will seek to confirm your pregnancy by ultrasound. An ultrasound is needed to confirm a viable uterine pregnancy, cardiac function, and to estimate how long you’ve been pregnant.

If you have already scheduled an abortion, Oasis can offer you an ultrasound. This is to determine how far along you are so that you know what abortion options are available for you. If you have already had an ultrasound, much can change from your initial ultrasound until now. Making sure your pregnancy is viable is a key piece of information you need prior to making this decision. An ultrasound can confirm this for you and rule out potential complications, like miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy.

Before having an abortion procedure, it is important to get tested for STDs. STDs often have few or no symptoms. Left untreated, STDs can result in Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) following an abortion. This is because the bacteria causing the infection can be moved into the reproductive tract during the abortion procedure. PID can result in serious complications.
