If you are already navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, or another mental health condition, an unexpected pregnancy can feel like more than you know how to carry right now. On top of everything you are already managing, you may be feeling pressure to make a serious decision quickly. It is completely reasonable to stop and ask: could abortion worsen the mental health struggles I’m already working through?
At Oasis Medical Center, we are here to walk alongside you with care and without judgment. We offer free, confidential appointments where you can ask questions, process your emotions, and get accurate information before making any decision.

Your Mental Health History Matters
A woman’s emotional experience following an abortion is deeply individual. What one woman feels in the days after a decision may look completely different from what another experiences months or even years later.
Because your response is tied to your personal history, the circumstances surrounding your decision, and the support available to you, there is no way to predict with certainty how abortion might affect you emotionally.
What the Research Shows
Studies have found that pre-existing mental health challenges are one of the strongest predictors of emotional difficulty following an abortion, meaning that if you are already managing depression, anxiety, or trauma, your risk of a more difficult emotional outcome may be notably higher than for someone without that history.
Research has also found that women who had abortions faced significantly higher rates of depression and anxiety compared to women who carried pregnancies to term. For someone whose mental health is already fragile, the addition of new emotional weight, whether that is grief, regret, or a sense of loss, can feel much harder to absorb and process.
Additional studies have further found that suicide rates among women who have had abortions are approximately two to six times higher than among women who gave birth, a finding that takes on added weight for anyone already navigating emotional vulnerability.
Circumstances That May Add to Emotional Strain
Beyond pre-existing mental health history, certain circumstances are linked to a greater likelihood of emotional difficulty following an abortion. These include lacking support from a partner, family, or trusted friends, feeling rushed or pressured into a decision, and experiencing conflict between the decision and deeply held personal, moral, or spiritual values.
Pregnancy decisions are rarely made in isolation, and the weight of relationship stress, financial fear, or feelings of isolation can intensify emotional responses regardless of the path chosen.
